The Union of Media Professionals of Benin (UPMB) continues to knock on every door for a brighter future for Beninese journalism. This time, President Hervé Prudence Hessou and his delegation set their sights on the great neighbour to the East. The Union was received on Monday in audience by Her Excellency Mrs. Mopelola ADEOLA-IBRAHIM, Ambassador of Nigeria to Benin.

A strategic move initiated by the new UPMB bureau, aimed at diversifying its partners in order to strengthen its institutional framework and accelerate the professionalization of the media in Benin. At the heart of the discussions, President Hessou presented the 8 pillars of his work plan. Two major concerns particularly caught attention.

First, the specialization of Beninese journalists. The UPMB President advocated for an English language immersion program for media professionals, an essential condition for covering sub-regional and international news. Then, as a logical follow-up to specialization, the offer of scholarships in Nigerian universities. The UPMB is seeking technical support to build capacity through training scholarships in journalism schools and Nigerian universities, on specialized topics in journalism and communication. A request that is part of a desire for structured and sustainable cooperation.

Favourable Response

For her part, Her Excellency Mrs. Mopelola ADEOLA-IBRAHIM praised the relevance of the eight pillars, describing them as commendable. She acknowledged the existence of concrete avenues to initiate a partnership with the UPMB. The Ambassador finally promised to respond favourably to President Hessou's invitation and to visit, as her schedule allows, the Union's headquarters at the Maison des Médias.

Accompanied by the Secretary for Organization Serge Vivien KOUGNIMON and the Administrative Secretary Parthené ATREVY, the UPMB President has just completed a fruitful outing. The remarks of his host suggest a favourable echo to the grievances presented by Hervé Prudence Hessou.
